The crack of doom shall swallow up this world
And all that is upon it be destroyed
         Resolved into components unalloyed
Its atoms rent and into space be hurled.
Whether it end in fire or end in ice
By asteroid, or by inconstant sun
Or by our own works should it be undone
Its permanence is but the roll of dice.
The starry vault must teem with life before
This fragile blue-green bauble meet its end
Across the sea of suns ourselves we send
The crib's a grave for those that risk no more.
So long as life from life to life is hurled
The crack of doom may swallow up this world.
